The Institute of Energy Economics, affiliated with the Faculty of Finance and Accounting, University of Economics in Prague, brings together students and professionals interested in energy economics. Our goal is to provide ties with one of the most important and fastest-growing industry sectors, which is the energy sector.
In recent years the Czech university campus has not been able to fully capture the very dynamic development of the economic aspects of energetics which resulted in a gap between academia and industry. The Institute of Energy Economics was thus set up by the Faculty of Finance and Accounting of the University of Economics Prague to serve as a pioneer in field of energy economics research and education We focus on targeted support of research in the Czech language, organization of seminars and symposia and also raising students' awareness and understanding of the subject.
The Institute of Energy Economics has the ambition to become a respected independent research centre for energy economics not only in the Czech Republic but also more widely in the future. As such, we organize an annual competition of students’ academic papers in the field of energy economics – the Energy Economics Contest. Furthermore the Institute via its publishing and educational activities, brings energy economics to the wider public.
Vision
At the beginning of the Institute of Energy Economics was the vision of bridging the energy business and academia field, and the systematic development of energy economics as an applied subdiscipline at the University of Economics in Prague.
The strategic importance of the energy industry continues to grow and is characterized by large capital flows, so we decided to create this connection for students of economics and finance at the University. Nowadays there is an intensifying discussion on renewable sources, emission allowances and direction of energy policy. The liberalization of the electricity markets was initiated a decade ago and is now gradually taking place also in the gas markets. We believe that these changes are of such significance that we should give them our attention at the biggest economic university in the country.
The foundation of IEE simply followed similar institutions with a long-standing tradition at universities in England, Germany, Austria, Italy and elsewhere. We offer students direct links to leading experts from the energy sector, support the work of writing on energy issues and open doors for personnel cooperation. We welcome everyone interested in energetics and we believe we can enrich both our partners and students, and cultivate the field of energy economics in the country.
