Border Anxiety
Within Europe, new divisions are emerging. Is this the Europe we want?

Europe is not about borders. It is about pursuing the ideal of the four freedoms and ever closer union. Yet recent developments have posed challenges to those ideals. The Eurozone is becoming a club that enforces economic divides within the EU and the refugee crisis has put national border guards on alert. The spirit of separatism is in the air ahead of the Brexit referendum, and with the Catalan question still unresolved. On top of all of which, Erik Tabery recently wrote in the Czech magazine Respekt that “Central Europe no longer exists, only East and West, as it used to be”, hinting at the return of the old Cold War divide. Are these just overblown fears?

Focus:
What are the new dividing lines in Europe?
What challenges does Europe face in terms of new borders - either physical or bureaucratic?
What can be done to reverse such trends?
