The main objective of the Antall József Knowledge Centre’s (AJKC) annual Foreign and Security Policy Conference is to bring together Hungarian and international academic experts, policy-makers, and opinion-shapers to address a relevant issue of international relations by discussing its most important events and phenomena. As with all activities of AJKC, the countries of the Visegrád Cooperation represent a permanent focus for the conference series.
The 2014 instalment in the series marks the 25th anniversary of the conclusion of the Cold War and the regime changes in Poland, Hungary, and former Czechoslovakia. On this occasion, the conference will investigate the relevant history and legacy of the Cold War in order to build understanding of current developments in global affairs.
Over the course of two days comprising four panels, renowned experts will present their recent research and offer their insights on the Cold War’s effects on the V4 countries and the contemporary foreign and security policies of the United States and Russia. The first day will provide a historical overview of the events, processes and institutions that defined the polarized world order, as well as the role they played in the democratisation processes of our region. While the second day will offer a closer look at today’s issues in US-Russia relations, with special regard to the activities of intelligence and secret services.
In line with the aim of the conference to give thorough insight into major Cold War figures, AJKC is publishing the autobiographies of Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, and Helmut Kohl. The premier launch event for the Hungarian edition of one of these volumes, An American Life by President Reagan, will take place as a follow-up event to the conference.
